REFURBISHMENT AND EXTENSION OF CAMPHILL BOOKSHOP

Burns Construction recently began an exciting transformation project at Newton Dee Camphill to deliver a fully refurbished zero waste store. The project included the demolition of the former Bookshop wing and entrance porch, as well as a full internal strip-out of the remaining building. These initial works paved the way for a new extension and the upgrade of the retained structure.

Demolition and Site Preparation

To create space for the new zero waste store, we demolished the existing wing and entrance down to foundation level. Following that, we carried out an extensive strip-out of the remaining structure, leaving only the main frame of the original building. This approach ensured a clean slate for high-quality modernisation while preserving the essential framework.

Eco-Friendly Construction and Materials

The new extensions are being constructed on specialist ground-screwed piles. This method minimises environmental disruption and aligns with sustainable building practices. Timber kits clad in larch rainscreen panels form the building’s new envelope, while the roofs feature durable aluminium standing seam cladding—both materials chosen for their longevity and low maintenance.

Enhancing the Exterior Aesthetic

To revitalise the building’s appearance, we are installing new aluminium windows and external doors across the façade. These upgrades will significantly enhance natural light and improve both energy performance and curb appeal.

Interior Fit-Out with Sustainable Craftsmanship

Internally, the reconfiguration includes new timber stud partitions, suspended ceilings, and high-quality flooring. We are laying vinyl in functional areas and larch herringbone flooring in customer zones to create a warm, modern shopping environment. Moreover, purpose-built timber fitments, crafted in our in-house joinery workshop, will complete the project with bespoke, sustainable finishes.

Final Touches and Upgrades

The project also includes full service upgrades to support the needs of the new store. These improvements will ensure the zero waste store operates efficiently and meets the highest standards in functionality and sustainability.
