REFURBISHMENT OF STONEHAVEN LIFEBOAT STATION
In early 2024, Burns Construction (Aberdeen) Ltd was proud to be selected for the storm damage refurbishment of the Stonehaven Lifeboat Station on behalf of the RNLI, restoring the critical facility after storm damage.
Severe weather had caused extensive damage to the building, particularly to its shutters. As a result, water flooded the interior and compromised much of the structure.
Our team stepped in to restore the lifeboat station to full functionality, ensuring a safe and modern facility for the RNLI to continue its vital work.
Sector: Refurbishment
Client: RNLI
Project: Stonehaven Lifeboat Station
Location: Stonehaven
Extensive Internal and External Refurbishment
Our works included a complete upgrade to both the internal and external elements of the building. We replaced damaged windows and doors, completed full external decoration, and installed a new metal pitched roof and single-layer flat roofing system.
Internally, we constructed a new visitors’ mezzanine gallery and a retail shop area. The project also included the addition of modern crew facilities such as new showers, toilets, changing areas, and a fully equipped kitchen.
Upgraded Crew Areas and Mechanical Systems
To support the RNLI’s operations, we created new briefing and meeting rooms, as well as a dedicated station office. In parallel with these upgrades, we carried out extensive mechanical and electrical (M&E) alterations.
These included space heating powered by a ground source heat pump (GSHP), which required boreholes to be sunk within the boathall. We also installed electric panel heaters, a new cold water storage tank (CWST), and upgraded hot and cold water systems. Mechanical ventilation systems were added to improve air quality and efficiency.
Final Touches for a Fully Renewed Lifeboat Station
Due to the initial flooding, all internal finishes required replacement. This included new floor and wall coverings and a full internal redecoration.
The result was a fully refurbished, high-performance facility that supports the RNLI’s essential services. The finished storm damage refurbishment has given the RNLI team in Stonehaven a safe, durable, and welcoming environment to serve the community.
