Trinity Church Refurbishment

INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL REFURBISHMENT OF TRINITY CHURCH

Burns Construction recently completed the Trinity Church refurbishment, a multi-phase restoration of a historic B-listed granite building in central Aberdeen, turning a largely disused church into a modern, accessible community and worship space while preserving its heritage character.

The project was deliberately split into phases due to the charitable funding model — funds were raised progressively through donations and grants, so priority works were delivered incrementally rather than waiting for the full budget.

Early phases focused on envelope protection: External granite cleaning, repointing in lime mortar, localised stone/roof repairs, external railings refurbished & repainted and initial internal preparation. Phase 2 was the major internal transformation: Extensive strip-out (pews, stages, raised floors, walls, ceilings, old services), structural alterations (new stair openings, lift shaft, widened floor edges), new stairs, rebuilt partitions, floor finishes, MEP adjustments to suit new layout.

Phase 3 was a comprehensive finishing & systems upgrade: Full new mechanical/plumbing systems + strip-out of old, complete new electrical installations, joinery, plaster, tiling, decoration. We successfully managed a technically demanding heritage project in a live urban setting: coordinating listed-building constraints, phased budgets, complex MEP retrofits in an old structure, and sensitive conservation work.
